A loss in productivity can be harmful, whatever business or industry you are in, and if you work for yourself, it is even more important to be on top of things every day. Every minute that you are not productive, you are not making money, or even worse, losing money.
Whatever the reason for needing to give your productivity a boost, it is vital that you get to the bottom of what is making you feel this way. Getting to the root of the issue is the first step towards dealing with. To help you get back on track, here are five of the main reasons as to why you might not be getting the job done.
Your physical or mental health is compromised.
When we don’t feel our very best, it can be challenging to keep on top of work and feel motivated. When you are working for yourself, it can be tempting to neglect your health – working every hour available and not getting a good night’s sleep, poor diet choices, and ignoring symptoms that suggest all is not as it should be. It is essential that you take care of yourself before anything else – and that includes your mental health as well. As the old saying goes, ‘you can’t pour from an empty jug,’ and that is true for business. If you don’t feel great, pay a visit to your doctors, and remember: it is ok to take time out for yourself once in a while.
Your computer is on a go-slow.
When your computer is on a go-slow, you are more likely to be. After all, most of your business operations are handled from your computer, and if that isn’t working productively, neither are you! It’s one of the few occasions where a worker CAN blame its tools! Give your computer a health check once in a while by deleting any unnecessary files or uploading them to a cloud storage system, and remove pesky programs that you no longer use. It’s straightforward to do and give your machine – and you – a whole new lease of life.
You don’t have any goals or deadlines.
When working for yourself, it is easy to get caught in the mindset of ‘I’ll do it later,’ and not having a specific deadline in mind or a goal can be detrimental to productivity levels. Even if you have no official deadline, set yourself one so that you have something to work to. Having a reward at the end to look forward to can also be excellent for motivation. If you are struggling with this, a time management method, such as the Pomodoro technique, can be incredibly useful.
The passion has gone.
This is the hardest one to come back from but fear not because it can be overcome with a little bit of work. Take some time to think about why you chose to go in this direction and what excited you about it in the first place. If you need to, look at how you can inject some excitement back into the business. Can you create a fabulous new marketing campaign, or aim to land yourself a particular high profile client?
