Right now, you know that content is key. You want to start your own business, you want to be your own boss, and you know that content marketing is the best option to help you to do it. But you have no experience. So does that mean you shouldn’t try to make it happen? Of course not.
It just means that you need to work a little bit harder to get your business off the ground. But if you’re determined and you’re not afraid to hustle, that won’t bother you. When you’re stuck, you don’t feel like you’re on the right career path, and you want to be happy, doing your own thing can certainly allow you to move forward. And content is the future. So if you’re willing to get on board, you could be part of something special. But how?
First of all, you’re going to want to ensure that you don’t let your confidence hold you back. You may not have any experience in the online world, and you may not know anything about blogging right now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do well.
As long as you’re willing to learn, you’ll get there. So believe in yourself and then, prepare to put the work in. Because you don’t have experience, you then have to put in more effort to get up to speed. But that’s why you’re here! So let’s take a look at what you can do to get started with a blog or content marketing when you have no experience.
Research, Research, Research
First of all, you need to do your research. And this is into content marketing, blogging – all of it. Just give yourself a day, a week, or however long you can, grab a notepad and a pen, and write it all down. Try to get to know what the blogging business is all about. You’ll find that there are some leading influencers and businesses in the content marketing space that can give you pretty much all of the info you need. But don’t pressure yourself. At this point, you’re just looking to understand the industry a little bit. That’s all. The rest will come with experience.
Know Your Niche
Then, you’re going to want to work out what it is that you’re going to do. You know that you want to be a blog and a content marketer, but where are you going from there? What do you want to write about or talk about? Really work out what your niche is, whether it’s something quite broad and cover a few things, like lifestyle topics, or something incredible narrow, like breeding a certain kind of fish!
Get Set Up
From here, you’re then going to need to get set up. Choose your hosting program, and register your domain name. Try to give this some thought, as it’s going to become your business name – or close to it.
Research The Market
Next, you’re going to want to research the niche that you’re going to be in. Think about the kind of content you want to put out, and what topics they’ll be in specifically. There are lots of different ways that you can think about choosing blog topics, so definitely do some research and take your time to come up with tons of options to get yourself started.
Start Writing
Then you need to start writing. And don’t look into this too much. It’s okay that you’re not a Pulitzer Prize winning author. You just be, write about what you know or what you want to talk about, and write with authenticity. Use your content planner and just get started. That’s going to be the key to getting your audience interested in what you have to say. Don’t try to be anyone else. Just be you! It’s more important to just create the content and get it out there than to be too precious about it.
Hire A Designer
Next, you need a designer. Don’t worry if you’re not someone that can do anything with HTML or design – just outsource it. Remember, investing in this and getting the best possible design for your money is going to be what takes you to the next level. So take a look at a couple of designers and hire someone that you know can produce the graphics and imagery you need to support your content marketing business.
Create A Strategy
From here, you need a marketing strategy. You need to know exactly how you’re going to promote your business across social media, and when you’re going to do it. Yes, you’ll want to experiment with each platform, but don’t try to do it all at once. Because that’s a sure fire way to fail. Instead, you need to master one, then add another to your marketing mix. So plan all of this out in your strategy.
Start Your Email List
At the same time, make sure that you build your email list right away. You really need to start collecting those emails and engaging with your early readers as soon as you can. These are the guys that are often going to be the most loyal. And with your own email list, you can market to them directly – without any social platform changes affecting your relationship.
Test, Test, Test
When you get started, you have to be innovative. Don’t worry so much about how you’re going to do things – just do them. All you can do is try. Test out different ideas and find out what works for your business, what your audience responds too – and on what platforms too. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to this, you need to figure out what works for you.
Focus On Your Audience
Above all else, you need to focus on your audience. Not your competitors, not what you want to put out – but your audience and what they want from you. Make sure that you’re listening to them, that you’re utilizing the data you have, and that you’re reacting to what they want. When you do this, you will make a success of your content marketing business without any experience.
